Song: Out Of Control (featuring remixes)
Artist: Mike Delinquent Project Ft KCAT & Donae’o
Reviewer: Jacob Kordan
‘Out of Control’ by Mike Delinquent is a throwback to UK garage and the catchy sort of tunes Artful Dodger or M.J. Cole used to put out. A catchy synth line (which in fact considerably resembles the main hook melody to ‘Flash Dance... What a Feeling’) starts off the song, before it breaks into a very 90’s sounding 2- step drum break and organ bass line with a well sung vocal hook over the top. One and half minutes into the song there is the generic 16 bar UK garage MC rap which become synonymous with the genre many years ago. The main hook then kicks back in to finish off the song. The main gripe with this song I have is that you could put in a playlist with other late 90’s garage tracks and not notice a difference in:
1.) The production values
2.) Song structure
3.) The sound of the song ie. Melodies, bass line and drum break.
Although an admirable effort in reviving a lost genre of music, Mike Deliquent has made, in my view, the mistake of not choosing to progress a now stagnated formula, but deciding to stick with previous conventions. As a result producing a work that sounds strikingly similar to so many UK garage tracks we have heard before.
The most noteworthy remix on the EP is the Kryder Remix which brings the tune more up to date, with heavy kicks a dirtier bass line and a more modern electro feeling. This remix is much more progressive and likely to get the party going, with great build-ups and breaks. The best track on the EP.
Final Score- Out of Control (original) : 2 out of 5
Out of Control (Kryder remix): 3.5 out of 5
