Song: Dedication To My Ex
Artist: Lloyd featuring Andre 3000
Lloyd Polite, Jr.(yes that is his real name) has a great voice, that is without a doubt. He’s best known for his appearance in young money’s Bedrock but has a very successful solo career as well with his last album lesson in love.
Dedication to my ex as you can guess is a song about his Lloyds ex-girlfriend. Not a subject matter that is uncommon however this is a really good track. Even though the subject matter is somewhat of a downer, the track want’s to make you dance, which is somewhat paradoxical. What makes me fond of it is the fact that the style is almost a branch of soulish motown with a modern twist. Whilst not a groundbreaker it does make a refreshing change from the sleazy R&B songs that plagues the charts. Polow Da Don has done great with the production of this track and given Lloyd a platform to shine, however at times the synths do sound very cheesy though others might argue that the cheesiness creates the charm. At one point in the build up to the chorus there’s a similar to Amy Winehouse’s rehab, which isn’t a bad thing. Andre 3000 of Outkast fame appears on the track and he puts puts icing on cake as he brings another dimension to the track, ensuring that it stays fresh, while others might say he’s the best thing about it.
Here is where I’m disappointed. Lyrically, especially if you’re listening to the dirty version, is terrible (there’s a lot of Female genetalia being mentioned...or cats). The clean version is a lot better and won’t make you cringe. I’m not a prude but it just seems unnecessary, especially if you’re expecting it to be a hit. I won’t type the lyrics out but take my word, it’s bad.
Apart from the that I think Dedication to My Ex is a really good pop song. It’ll be a pop hit just because of the fact that it’s ridiculously catchy and it’ll be stuck in your head for days. If you do end up checking it out though, make sure it’s the clean version unless you enjoy being dirty talked to. It's not a game changer and for some it'll be too cheesy but it's an enjoyable listen.
Final Score- 3.5/5
