Viva Brother are a relatively new band, with their debut album “Famous First Words” being released in August this year. They have produced music under previous band names such as “Kill the Arcade” and “Wolf Am I” in which their tracks were under a more punk based genre. Their career began to kick off after Zane Lowe played their demo on his BBC Radio 1 show, and since have supported acts such as The Streets.
This new release is quite different to tracks they have produced under previous names as it is more indie with hints of pop than their original punk based songs, and I think the new choice of name definitely shows the change in genre this band are going through. The change in genre is probably a step in the right direction though due to them having more success producing this different sound. The first couple of opening bars I must admit did capture my attention and I can’t really deny this song isn’t catchy as I found it stuck going round in my head for the rest of the day after only listening to it twice. I also think the public will be able to relate to the track as the lyrics focus, as a lot of songs do, on love; but I personally feel the lyrics lack a little bit of meaning and depth.
They claim their inspiration comes from bands such as Blur and The Stone Roses, and you can definitely detect the influence these bands have had on Viva Brother throughout the song. I think fans that liked this group of guys when they were “Kill the Arcade” or “Wolf Am I” possibly may not be as interested in the pop-indie based genre this band seem to be heading towards, but for a new band this debut single is promising.
