The Weeknd ft. Daft Punk ‘Starboy’ (Single)
Canadian r&b singer-songwriter gone pop’s biggest star of the decade, The Weeknd is set to hit the charts again with his new single ‘Starboy’. The track is a collaboration with French electronic duo Daft Punk, and is the title track from The Weeknd’s forthcoming third studio album.
‘Starboy’ is a massive step back from the bombastic, anthemic songs from The Weeknd’s previous album ‘Beauty Behind The Madness’ seeing a return to the tight, catchy r&b rhythms of former album ‘Kiss Land’. After hearing The Weeknd’s collaborations with Future, I was almost convinced that his next works would run in a similar vein as Rihanna’s latest material: darker, more synthetic and heavily laced with elements of trap music. As you can imagine, ‘Starboy’ is a pleasant surprise that gives a bittersweet taste of nostalgia for records like ‘Trilogy’ while straddling the boundaries between The Weeknd’s roots and his new, more pop-orientated direction.
While ‘Starboy’ isn’t immediately attention grabbing, after a few listens I was hooked – drawn in by the thick basslines, the groove in the drum patterns and the strong chime of the piano lower in the mix. As always, no matter how The Weeknd uses his voice I am captivated by his flair. It is wonderful to hear the sultry lower end of his range again: the lower end of his range turns a somewhat flat hook into something that draws me in to the beat over and over.
Collaborations between popular artists and Daft Punk either turn out to be wacky or wonderful, or a surprising mix of the two. ‘Starboy’ firmly falls into the wonderful category with its simplicity and charm the song will be a big hit amongst fans of The Weeknd’s previous work, as well as appeal to his new fans.
‘Starboy’ is available now via digital retailers. The album is due November 25th, 2016.
