The Wombats – Greek Tragedy
For many of us The Wombats have disappeared into the music scene after hits such as Lets Dance to Joy Division and Moving to New York, but to many they have remained. I’m the former not the latter. Since they had such big hits in from Proudly Present … A Guide to Love, Loss & Desperation I was surprised to see that they didn’t have the same success from This Modern Glitch. While I’ve not really listened to them much so I thought I’d give them another chance since the release of Greek Tragedy.
With a lovely techno riff to begin with, backed by drums before gaining a more soft rock feel, its reminding me of some of the early work of Owl City. It builds wonderfully into something I wasn’t expecting to hear from them. I never thought they would be able to follow up on their bigger tracks from a few years ago but they definitely have been working on something special. Lyrically, I’m surprised, seemingly comparing a romance with a theater production does seem to work. It’s catchy too, in its own way being stuck in my head after a couple of listens, and even making it’s way into my driving playlist (it must be doing something right there).
It’s safe to say I’m expecting much more from The Wombats in the future, this track has been a surprise for me. It still has the same feeling as some of their previous work off their debut album. While I may not have been the biggest of fans to begin with, I am certainly going to keep an eye out for any more new material from them.
